Our Mission: To support and encourage a change of attitude towards working donkeys.
At Donkey Rights Group, we depend entirely on kind donations so that we can offer the best possible life
for donkeys in our country and beyond, and continue with our vision to stand up for the rights of
donkeys around the globe. We urgently need to raise funds for veterinary medicines and food, as well
as our mobile team treating injured and sick donkeys in Kenya.
Donkey Rights Group aims to recognize the significant contribution donkeys make to the rural and
national economy across Kenya.
We aim to offer a loving and safe environment to all Kenyan donkeys
that have been otherwise abandoned, neglected or abused and are under the threat of destruction. As a
donkey welfare group based in Naivasha, Kenya, we strive to offer solutions to the numerous problems
that plague these domestic creatures by being good stewards over the funds needed to achieve this
goal.
Education and advice are integral parts of Donkey Rights Group’s work with the owners and their families. We foresee a society where the contribution of donkeys to local community’s livelihood is appreciated and recognized. Our mission is to partner with governments, local communities and other stakeholders to promote donkey welfare in Kenya for better human and environmental health.
Alex started the Donkey Rights Group as a hobby 15 years ago. His family had always kept a few donkeys on their farm, using them for light labor and companionship. To Alex, these creatures were more than just animals; they were friends who deserved respect and care However, he always thought that the local community didn’t give the donkeys the humane treatment they deserved. Disturbed by the thought of what he could do to rescue these wonderful creatures, Alex thought of forming this welfare group that would address their plight. This simple act of love has turned out into the donkey rights advocacy group in Kenya of its kind.
As days turned into weeks, Alex began to pay closer attention to how donkeys were treated in his Community. He witnessed them being overworked in fields without proper rest or care. He saw them left out in harsh weather conditions without shelter or food. It became painfully clear that many people viewed donkeys merely as tools rather than sentient beings deserving compassion.
Determined to make a change, Alex decided he could no longer stand by idly while these animals suffered. He began researching animal rights organizations and learning about advocacy efforts across the country. Inspired by stories of individuals who had fought for animal welfare, he felt compelled to take action. That’s how Donkey Rights Group was formed. And since its inception over a decade ago—the journey has continued onward—one step at a time—towards ensuring every donkey in Kenya receives the rightful dignity & respect it so richly deserves!
Over the years, Alex, a lifelong donkey enthusiast and founder of this welfare group has spent his incomes and time educating communities on why they should treat their donkeys with dignity and respect they deserve. His passion emanated from seeing how people in their neighborhood mistreated, abused or abused donkeys. Alex believes that donkeys deserve better treatment just like you and me. Due to rampant donkey smuggling and mistreatment in Kenya, Alex welcomes you to support us give donkeys another chance. Feel free to make your donation and be counted as a donkey welfare ambassador today!
Donkeys have been a cornerstone in human existence and they still there in the entire communities today, ferrying water, food and crops. They are highly intelligent creatures, sociable and calm, capable of independent thinking and decision making.
Many drive their donkeys into the grave simply out of a need to survive, to ensure their children and families are fed and sheltered. And when those families can no longer depend on their donkeys, more often than not its women, children and particularly girls who feel the impact most.
Here at Donkey Rights Group our work transforms lives. We provide lifesaving veterinary care, we educate current and future donkey owners. And, of course, we provide sanctuary to donkeys who have been neglected, abused and abandoned.
“In 2018, one of our loyal supporters came up with a project and started an Adopt-a-Donkey initiative. It has proved to be so popular that she has decided to continue the adoption scheme.
The cost for adopting a donkey is $50 per month, and you will receive a printed adoption certificate for your chosen donkey by post or email.”
